Technology fields in the hydrogen sector pose a variety of challenges. A central focus is the Levelised Cost Of Hydrogen (LCOH), an important metric for calculating the profitability of green hydrogen projects. Reducing this cost depends on the long service life of components, the efficiency of hydrogen systems, high material purity, and lightweight construction. This is where high-performance plastics come into play, with their diverse properties – including corrosion and chemical resistance, low outgassing behaviour, very good formability, and low weight compared to metals. Thermoplastics are also recyclable, and can be returned to material cycles more easily than metals or thermoset materials.

Plastic solutions for fuel cell technology and components
Our high-performance plastics are used in fuel cell systems as bipolar plates, end plates, insulation plates, or as media supply units (MSU). Together with respected industry and research partners, we have developed materials for hydrogen fuel cell components and successfully transferred them into series production.
Plastic solutions for hydrogen production through electrolysis
We also manufacture various key components in the field of electrolysis. In addition to the cell frame, which serves as the basic structural component, insulating plates are used to electrically and chemically insulate the end plates from the inside of the electrolyzer.

Specially developed plastics
We have our own in-house compounding department that specialises in application-specific material development. This enables us to guarantee an optimised property profile for high-performance plastics, tailored to each hydrogen application. A strong example is our specially developed high-temperature electrical (HTE) compound range, created specifically for the production of bipolar plates used in fuel cells, redox-flow batteries and electrolyzers. This customised adaptation of plastic properties makes a decisive contribution to the efficiency and safety of the fuel cell.

Technical Solutions for the Hydrogen Industry
Chemical resistance & corrosion resistance
High-performance plastics are corrosion-resistant and have very good chemical resistance. Both properties are crucial for use in hydrogen applications, due to the contact with chemicals involved. At Façade Creations, the property profile of each plastic is specially tailored to the intended application.
Electrically insulating and conductive plastics
Depending on the hydrogen component and its area of application within the stack, the material used must have either conductive or non-conductive properties. Together with respected fuel cell research partners, Façade Creations has developed highly conductive hydrogen fuel cell materials with graphite filling, particularly suitable for bipolar plates used in fuel cells or redox-flow batteries.
Plastics with low outgassing
PEM systems require components that do not negatively influence the desired electrochemical processes through outgassing of the material used. Low ion leaching is particularly important for fuel cells, in order to avoid poisoning the membrane. High-performance plastics with low outgassing and high purity properties contribute significantly to the longevity and long-term functionality of the components.
Non-flammable plastics
Façade Creations draws on important aerospace flammability standards (such as the large-aircraft fire-safety requirements set out under FAR 25.853), which specify strict requirements for flammability, smoke formation and toxicity. Developing standards specific to hydrogen applications are constantly monitored and taken into account as they emerge.
